wrapping up

i will be wrapping up + packing up all the scarves i've received so far on monday.

if you have not already mailed your scarves to me, please consider sending them directly to womansplace, or to any other local shelter or charity that you want to support with a nice, handmade donation.

the deadline that i have set is truly one for my own sanity - with all the other projects i need to get done for the holidays, i only want to send one bulk shipment of scarves to the shelter. it saves time and confusion for you to send your scarves directly there as well, at this point. (google 'womansplace' for the address if you want to send your scarves there!)

again, i really want to thank everyone who has gotten involved, shown interest, and been generally supportive. if you are interested in working on something like this again next year, let's get started soon - the earlier we begin, the more locations we can give to. so keep in mind that just because this shipment is going out, that doesn't mean we can't still use our hobbies and spare time to do something kind for other people. stay in touch, and thanks again. everyone has been really wonderful about this project.

progress, and a deadline

shannon brought over a nice big bag of scarves last night - the collection is growing steadily, and i just wanted to say thanks to everyone who's sent in hooks, yarn, or finished scarves. and also to everyone who's offered to give us a space for crafting (check out the link to the right for your mom's in bellevue - it looks awesome, and lz was really great about offering to let us use the store for a craft session). of course, since meetings aren't a very big part of this project, it hasn't been necessary to procure a space, but it's still so great of people to offer and to be supportive. so thanks everyone, this is going really well.

in order to make one main delivery of scarves, i'm setting a sort of deadline for this project. i'd like to have any finished scarves you have by december 10th. this way we can take them to womansplace and they will have them on hand for women and children who are in the shelter after that point. (of course, if you would like to make scarves to donate, but don't have much time right now because of holiday crafting, you should still go ahead and make them post-holiday season and deliver them then. western pennsylvania stays cold forever, so it isn't as though scarves are only needed in december. the 10th is just when i'd like to have all of the scarves for this specific project.)

that's all, guys. this is going really well, and i'm really grateful for the effort you're all making.

new new new

a few of the scarves

our stack of scarves is growing by the day. i've gone through my yarn collection, and i've come up with three grocery bags of untouched yarn that i am putting toward this project. for all of you who are interested, this means the yarn is up for grabs; come hang out this sunday and use it up. bring your hooks or needles.

this sunday, if anyone is interested, a few of us will be making scarves at my apartment. if you don't have my address email me for it. this will start any time after 5, when i get home from work.

for those of you who are still crafting but can't make it in person, please go check out womansplace.org. shannon and i went and toured the facility on friday the 5th of this month, and it was really incredible. the services they offer are so important, and it was really inspiring to go and see it in person. it served as a great reminder of why we are working on this.

Sunday, September 30 Meetup

how does 6 pm at kiva han on craig street in oakland sound to everyone? i'll be working until 5, and will probably just head over to start crafting and inhaling caffeine shortly after.

if you want to come and craft, feel free to send me an email first letting me know: chelseacreature@gmail.com. or just show up. we'll be the ones with all the yarn. if you can't make it but would like to be notified about future meetups, email me with your email address and "knit locally updates" as the subject.

for those of you who plan on coming, all you need to bring is yourself, your hooks or needles, your yarn, and your ideas and suggestions. if you have friends who are interested, definitely bring them along!

our craft sessions will probably be small and intimate and comfortable. schedules are tough this time of year, and meeting isn't mandatory in the least; it's just a nice way of communicating ideas and charting our progress.

don't just knit

crochet, sew, felt, embroider, and otherwise construct scarves to keep women and children in domestic violence shelters warm during the 2007/2008 holiday season. this project is modeled after many others throughout the country and around the world, but we're bringing it closer to home.

at the moment, i'm in contact with several shelters in the pittsburgh area, and there's a great interest in receiving donations of handmade scarves to give as gifts during the holidays. while we may not be able to meet every need of every individual in the area, the idea is to provide handmade, thoughtful, warm gifts to women and children in these shelters.

how to get involved:

we'll be meeting at to-be-designated locations on sunday evenings beginning at 5:30 in the evening to craft. this is a great way to get involved if you don't already knit or crochet, as there will be people there who can help teach you.

and of course, if you have extra skeins of yarn that are going unused, or even just odds and ends that are left over from past projects, donations of materials are especially appreciated.

information on a first, introductory craft session will be posted soon. please send questions and ideas to: chelseacreature@gmail.com.
